The Hummer was brought to the end user market by GM and it quickly acquired recognition due, partially, to being an intense vehicle that would handle almost any type of environment. Of course the Hummer 2 and H3 was no where near as great as the very first Hummer when going off road but these models still came across a marketplace as they where large, high end and much less expensive than the Hummer H1. They where also transformed into things like limousines, another thing that further established them as something exclusive in the heads of movie stars and the average Joe alike. Then Hummer offered the Hummer HX concept that took it all to an entirely new level. The fresh new glossy ultra futuristic styling made a lot of people including myself want a Hummer hx. We all eagerly waited to see the HX go into manufacturing

Then came the credit crunch that hit American automobile brands hard and no one perhaps harder than GM. In an effort to reduce the large losses the organization were suffering from it was decided to reduce the model line and sell or close down certain brand names. Hummer was one of those brand names. GM initially found a Chinese buyer for the hummer brand name but the sale was not accepted by the government and GM decided to close down Hummer manufacturing in the absence of a buyer. With that decision they essentially killed the possibilities of us seeing the Hummer HX on the roads unless someone resumes manufacturing and dust of the designs at a later date. This also meant that it is no longer achievable to buy a new hummer as none are being made. Well not for civilian use anyway. It is still achievable to get military surplus Hummers.

Typically the hummer has never been known as an inexpensive car. They were expensive to buy and were real gas guzzlers. Add to this that the second hand price wasn't great and it is easy to see how hummers didn't make good investments. However now when the manufacturing has been shut down all that could change. Iconic cars tend to see an increasing second hand value when manufacturing ended and the Hummer is an Iconic car. We might not have seen much of an effect on the second hand price of hummers due to this so far but we are likely to see it in a couple of years and the second hand price of a hummer is in other words likely to start going up in a few years. Purchasing an used Hummer these days might therefore turn out to be a great investment. Granted they are still gas guzzlers and with the high fuel prices they might still be poor investments if you intend to use them while waiting for the second hand price to start going up, but at the very least you can obtain some of the cash you spent on gas back when you sell it and in the meantime you can enjoy the satisfaction of driving a truly iconic automotive.

It is however important to keep in mind, as with all investments, there are no assured bets and there is no guarantee that the second hand price will go up. It just seems probably due to reasons outlined above. It is however possible that the green movement and hybrid cars will make large cars less attractive to everyone. Something that could force the second hand prices down.
