New York's Times Square Is Definitely One Of New York's Symbolic Images And So Has Been A Witness To Numerous Important Events
Times Square, named after the one-time head office of The New York Times. It is located in the area of Manhattan, New York City, which centres on 42nd Street and Broadway. It forms the western portion of the business area of Midtown Manhattan, New York.
The paper's operating facilities were relocated by Adolph S. Ochs, New York Times publisher, to a new tower on 42nd Street in the midst of the area known as Longacre Square. Ochs convinced Mayor George B. McClellan Jr to construct a subway stop at the site and named it Times Square. Officiated by Mayor McClellan, the location was officially named Times Square on April 8, 1904.
In the course of 1913, the newspaper moved out of the tower but continued to be in the locality. One Times Square tower, formerly known as the Allied Chemical Building, is the location of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop that replaced the fireworks display of 1904 to 1906. It had been December 31, 1907 when the ball, representing New Year's Day was first dropped at Times Square and from that point the Square has been the location of the main New Year's celebration in New York City. A minute of silence, followed by a recording of church bells pealing, took the place of the ball drop on account of wartime blackout restrictions during World War II.
The millennium celebration in New York on December 31, 1999 is considered as the largest assembling in Times Square since August 1945. Celebrations acknowledging the end of World War II generated reports of roughly two million people within Times Square.
Times Square rapidly grew as a cultural centre including theatres, music halls and luxurious hotels. Nevertheless, the 1930s and the start of the Great Depression shifted the overall tone downward. Times Square became a region full of "peep shows", all-night movie houses, and stores selling cheap tourist commodities. It began to be considered a dangerous location.
Removal of 'red light' interests and improving security in the area, provided the way for the opening of more tourist-friendly services. Such initiatives were led by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in the mid-1990s. This revitalisation began when the local government issued a sanction in opposition to the tight clustering of aforementioned businesses in the 42nd Street area. Several such shops closed or relocated to industrial areas in Brooklyn or Queens. These types of changes allowing for and encouraging far more fashionable establishments to move in.
Broadway's theatres and the numerous animated neon and television-like hoardings have made it amongst New York's symbolic images, competing with Las Vegas on the density of illuminated signs.
In 1992, the Times Square Alliance, a partnership of businesses, began improving the quality of commerce and sanitation in the region. At present, Times Square provides attractions such as a major TV studio for ABC, eating places and a number of movie theatre complexes. It has become a magnet for large financial, publishing, and media corporations. A larger police visibility in Times Square has improved the safety. While the rejuvenated Times Square is unquestionably safer and more pleasant, a few criticise that the neighbourhood has lost its spark and is now a thoroughly clean, "Disneyfied" version of its former self.
